Provincial Test of Reading and Writing (Grade 10)

              40 hours of community involvement.

All students who enter Grade 9 in 1999 or later must successfully complete the provincial secondary school literacy test in order to earn a secondary school diploma.  The test is administered in Grade 10.  The test will be based on the Ontario curriculum expectations for language and communication - particularly reading and writing up to and including Grade 9.  Remedial assistance for students is provided.  Students who do not successfully complete this test could be placed in a course focused on improving reading and writing in the following semester to better prepare them to retake the test.  Accommodations or deferrals may be granted by the principal.  Exemptions may be granted only if the student is not working toward an OSSD.

All students are required to complete a minimum of 40 hours of community involvement activities.  These activities may be completed at anytime during their years in the secondary school program.  However, students are encouraged to complete the hours while they are in Grades 9 or 10.  Students, in collaboration with their parents, will decide how they will complete their community involvement requirement.  The 40 hours must be outside of a student’s normal instructional hours - that is the activities are to take place in the student’s designated lunch hours, after school, on weekends, or during school holidays.  Parents may consult the Board’s Community Service in Catholic Secondary Schools documents for further information.

The school’s responsibility is limited to the management of the necessary documents (Notification of Community Involvement and Completion of Community Involvement). The procedure is explained in Teacher Advisor sessions.
