HOW JESUS
TREATED THIS GROUP |
| The Pharisees |
They were greatly respected
because they seemed to follow Jewish law perfectly. |
Mt 23:1-28 |
| Lepers |
They were forbidden to enter
any town and usually wandered the countryside in bands, barely
surviving. Leprosy causes a person to lose their sensation of pain.
As a result lepers increasingly damage their extremities and often have
open wounds they unknowingly acquired. |
Mt 8:1-4; 11:1-6
Lk 17:11-19 |
| Tax Collectors |
People often grumble about
paying taxes to their own government, but the Jews in Jesus' day
were paying taxes to another government, the Roman Empire. Tax
collectors were considered thieves and traitors. |
Mk 2:13-17
Lk 18:9-19 |
| The Poor |
Poverty was sometimes
considered a punishment God gave to people for their past sins. |
Lk 6:20-26; 16:19-31 |
| Prostitutes |
Prostitution was considered
sinful by the Jewish religion so prostitutes were looked down upon
as sinners and as leading others into sin. |
Lk 7:36-50
Mt 21:23-32 |
