SNC2P Unit 1 -Sustainability of Ecosystems - Project

New Skill: Writing for Specific Audiences

SNC2P_Unit_1_Ecosystems_Report_Project.wpd

Research Reports

bullet

Research reports are less rigidly structured and then lab reports but still need to be very clearly laid out. Your aim is to present factual information in an unbiased way.

bullet

Start by writing and outline. Decide what your topics main points are, and note your findings for each point. Plan an introduction for the beginning and a wrap-up for the end.

bullet

The introduction or first section is the most important. It is your chance to make the interesting aspects of the research immediately known to your readers. In one page (or less), summarize what you’ve discovered about a given topic: the most important issues and your conclusions about them.

bullet

Have a section (with a number and the title) for each main point. Readers will then be able to find a particular subject easily.

bullet

Write carefully and concisely. People do not have the time to read pages of unnecessary information.

bullet

You may be communicating quite advanced scientific or technical knowledge. Know your audience. Prepare a report that your readers can understand, without "talking down" to them.

bullet

Unless you have been asked for your opinion on an issue, try to keep to the facts.

bullet

In your final section, summarize your findings and what they mean.

bullet

Credit your sources in a complete list of references.

Position Papers

bullet

When planning a position paper you may either start with a position on an issue, and then conduct research to support your position, or start by researching a particular topic and then decide on a position in light of your research.

bullet

State your position in the beginning of your article and then supported with the results of your research. You do not have to balance your paper with contrary views, but you should be aware of other positions on the issue, and try to refute their arguments. However, it is very discourteous consult those holding opposing views. Support your arguments with evidence, reasoning, and logic.

Letters to the Editor

A letter to the editor of the newspaper or magazine is typically a shorter version of a position paper. You must write concisely (keep it to a couple of paragraphs), but possibly in a humorous or ironic manner. It is not necessary to backup every point you make the scientific facts, but do indicate that there is some evidence to support your position.

Use an Internet search engine like www.google.com to research for your unit project. Some sites are listed to help you get started.

Choose any 3 of the following:

1. Research the disappearance of the northern cricket frog (Acris crepitani) from southwestern Ontario and produce a report.

2. The peregrine falcon was once considered endangered. Research Canadian efforts to restore this predator and write a letter to the editor on their success.

3. Canadian wildlife biologists have been attempting to preserve the whooping crane. Are they succeeding? In a short position paper, evaluate the success of their program.

4. Find out more about one of the following exotic species that have been introduced into ecosystems in the Western Hemisphere: eelgrass; starlings; Russian thistle. Write a report on your findings.

5. Ploughing fields actually reduces the population of earthworms. Earthworms help decomposition and improve soil quality. Research the role of earthworms. In a position paper state what recommendations would you make to farmers based on your research?
