New Skill: Oral Presentation

Oral Presentations

There are several fairly simple general guidelines that will help to lower your stress level, improve your presentation, and help you convey your message to your audience, whatever type of oral presentation you are preparing.

bullet

Plan your oral presentation well in advance.

bullet

Find out how long you are expected to speak.

bullet

Prepare a point form "speech" on cue cards or a computer-based presentation. It is best not to read your speech, nor to memorize every word. Try to work from the points on your cue cards, and expand on them.

bullet

Practice your presentation to make sure that it fits into the allowed time. If you get stuck, use your notes or props as a guide.

bullet

Make sure that sure "props" (objects, posters, slides for overhead projection, slide show presentation, etc.) are ready and in good working order.

bullet

If you are nervous, take some slow deep breaths to calm yourself.

bullet

When you are speaking, keep your head up and do not talk to fast. Your audience must be able to hear what you have to say.

Electronic Communication

When using high-tech methods of communication, be careful not to get carried away with the technology. Just as if you were writing a research report by hand, your thoughts must be clearly stated, well-organized, and clearly presented, was supporting arguments and evidence. It is always a good idea to have someone not involved in your project check out your presentation before "going public" with it.

There are several software programs (such as Corel Presentations, and Microsoft PowerPoint) that allow you to create, write, edit, and illustrate a series of slides that can be projected onto the screen. You can even had a soundtrack, including music, sound effects, and recorded voice, to your presentation. Write your slides as point-form notes, limit yourself to know more than 10 lines of text on each slide, and make the words large enough to be easily read by the audience.

Use an Internet search engine like www.google.com to research for your unit project. Some sites are listed to help you get started.

Choose one (1) of the following:

1. Synthetic materials tend to be extremely durable and long-lived. This is an advantage when we are using them, but a problem when we want to get rid of them. What are chemists doing to reduce the problem? In groups of 2 or 3 (only!), investigate and present the development of biodegradable plastics.

2. As a group of 2 or 3 (only!), explore and present the effects of pollution on the environment.
